Aromatherapy by Francesca Cairns

What is Aromatherapy?
It is the use of Essential Oils distilled and extracted from herbs, grasses, flowers, woods and fruits to aide physical and Emotional wellbeing. It is blended in creams, ointments, oils, and other mediums and applied externally to the skin. The body then absorbs the healing properties of the Essence through the skin.

What are Essential Oils?
An Essential oil is a liquid that is generally distilled from the leaves, stems, flowers, bark, roots, and fruits. Essential oils contain the true essence of the plant and its healing properties.

Aromatherapy for Physical Wellbeing
The healing properties in the Essential Oils can be used for many physical ailments. For instance did you know that Essential Oil of Lavender is an excellent remedy for soothing sunburn, it is an antiseptic and antispasmodic and will also relieve and sooth dry eczema. It is a safe remedy to use for children too, a few drops in the bath, or on a pillow at night can help children sleep. Rosemary is an excellent tonic, it stimulates the circulatory system and helps purify the blood. Peppermint is excellent in cooling down sunburn and easing and cooling inflammatory conditions and as a cream is nice and cool and refreshing for the feet.

Aromatherapy for Emotional Wellbeing
Essentials oils can also affect our moods; our sense of smell triggers a system called the limbic system which in turn governs our hormones and moods. For instance a few drops of Essential Oil of Melissa in an infuser, or oil burner, or in the bath can help lift most “grey days” and Lavender can bring a real sense of calm on those crazy days. Rosemary is excellent aid for concentration and memory, whilst chamomile with a drop of grapefruit can help melt away feelings of irritation. For more general wellbeing Sweet Orange helps provide emotional balance and brings on a positive outlook.
