PRINTER FRIENDLY VERSION

Pregnancy Massage by Stephanie Price

More and more women are finding that a weekly or monthly massage during pregnancy helps to reduce stress, promote relaxation and provide emotional support.  In addition to the fact that massage during pregnancy feels really amazing, there are many other benefits for baby and mother.  Touch is vital to the mother's physical and emotional well-being as she adapts to her new body image.  Massage gives special attention to the mother-to-be, which in turn nurtures the new life that grows within.
Pregnancy massage is normally offered after the first trimester.
Specific benefits of pregnancy massage include -

  • Alleviates stress on weight-bearing joints such as pelvis, ankles and lower back, and reduces oedema (swelling of wrists and ankles
  • Relieves muscle spasms, cramps, fibrosis and pain, especially in the lower back (sacrum), upper back and neck
  • Can help to relieve tension headaches
  • Improves circulation by helping to increase nutrition to cells, also benefiting and reducing gastrointestinal problems
  • Reduces high blood pressure
  • Helps to release tension in respiratory muscles, when respiration is short
  • Creates a strong bond between baby and mother
